Information on PIRAMK

PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences is a regional, multidisciplinary, service sector-oriented higher education institution in the Tampere Region in Finland. There are more than 4000 students and 300 staff members in the PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences located in the city of Tampere and in the towns of Ikaalinen, Mänttä and Virrat (www.piramk.fi/english -> About PIRAMK). The institution started its activity in autumn 1997 as a temporary institution and was established on 1st August 2000.

PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences provides 17 Bachelor-level degree programmes in 6 fields of study as well as three Master-level degree programmes in health care and social services. In addition, PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences offers professional specialisation studies, further and continuing education and open polytechnic instruction. The research, development and consulting department offers education for enterprises and communities.

PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences Ltd

PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences is owned by PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences Ltd, whose shareholders are the City of Tampere, the Western Pirkanmaa Educational Federation of Municipalities, Northern Pirkanmaa Educational Federation of Municipalities, the Federation of Municipalities of Vocational Education in the Mänttä Region and the Federation of Municipalities of Vocational Education in Pirkanmaa. In all, 23 municipalities of the region thus indirectly own PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences. In addition to the municipal owners, PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences has four private shareholders. PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences has a 23-million EUR budget.

R&D and Consulting Services

PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences cooperates with business sector and public sector organisations in various ways. Regional expertise and multidisciplinary know-how are the strengths of our operations. Services to customers include development of companies/organisations, tailored training for companies and organisations, projects and ventures carried out with external financing, surveys and research, and theses. R&D activities in PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences concentrate on health services and health technology, biotechnology, enhancement of working ability, development of networked business processes and tourism services.

Quality Assurance System of PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences

PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences fulfils the national criteria set for the higher education quality assurance system as a whole as well as for the quality assurance of the basic tasks. The auditing was done in 2006 and is valid for six years.

The quality assurance of higher education is an important part of the process of forming the European Higher Education Area by 2010. This Bologna Process also includes the auditing of the higher education institutions´ quality systems.

Diploma Supplement Label

PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences has been awarded the Diploma Supplement label. Every student who graduates from the institution receive the Diploma Supplement automatically and free of charge.

The Diploma Supplement is a document attached to a higher education diploma aiming at improving international ‘transparency’ and at facilitating the academic and professional recognition of qualifications (diplomas, degrees, certificates etc.). It is designed to provide a description of the nature, level, context, content and status of the studies that were successfully completed by the individual named on the original qualification to which this supplement is appended.
