Getting around in Tampere

City Buses | Cycling | Taxi

The easiest way to travel within Tampere is either to walk, cycle or take the city bus.

City Buses
The city buses are clean, punctual and efficient. A single ticket for the bus costs EUR 2, but for regular users a Travel Card (matkakortti) with a student discount (for students between 20 and 29 years of age) is the best choice. Buy a travel card for EUR 6.70, and then you can load journeys either for 30 days/unlimited (EUR 33) or for a certain sum of money (if you load e.g. with EUR 20, each journey costs EUR 1,05). The former is called kausikortti (season ticket) and the latter arvokortti (stored value ticket). You can load the stored value ticket in multiples of EUR 20.

Bring your student card or a certificate from the institution stating that you are a student when buying the travel card in the Tampere City Transport Information Office (TKL). The student discount needs to be renewed at TKL every year at the beginning of the autumn semester. Go to TKL and show them your valid student card or certificate.

Remember one important thing when you travel by bus. The bus will not pick you up at the bus stop if you do not give the bus driver a sign, so wave your hand!

Cycling
Cycling is an excellent way to get around in Tampere – and to keep fit. Look for ads, check notice boards, or place your own ad and you might get an inexpensive bike for yourself. An inexpensive way to buy a bike is to go to the annual auction at the police station (usually in September and in April), where the police department auctions all the recovered bikes no one has claimed for a year. There will be an ad in the local newspaper Aamulehti about the auction (huutokauppa).

Taxi
In Tampere: To call a taxi, dial 10041 or from a mobile phone 0100 4131. Taxis are quite expensive in Finland, so try to share the taxi with someone if you have to use one. For example, it costs about EUR 17 from the city centre to Hervanta.
