PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences offers different kinds of courses about the Finnish culture and language. The courses are offered free of charge to all incoming exchange students/trainees of PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences. It is highly recommended to participate in the courses. Finnish language courses in other higher education institutions in Tampere are open for all exchange students enrolled in one of the four institutions (PIRAMK University of Applied Sciences, TAMK University of Applied Sciences, University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology). FINNISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE course 2 ECTS credits
The courses are arranged three to four times a year to facilitate the everyday life of each incoming group:
Course I: October – November
Course II: January – February
Course III: February – March
Course IV: March – April
The course content includes lectures and practice. The course content covers the characteristics of the Finnish language (conjugations, cases etc.), everyday vocabulary, numbers, dates, clock / times, greetings, family, home, living, locations (shops, banks, post offices), religion, church as well as Finnish food, drink and music. Students learn to use the most important phrases and form questions.

FINNISH WAY OF LIFE club (no credits will be granted of the course)
The course is arranged during the academic year (September – May) once a week.
During the course students will explore some things about the Finnish culture and everyday life. There will be discussion in the class room and experiences outside the class room. The program will be adjusted by the wishes of the students. Students can take a look at some everyday routines of Finns and things that have caused problems or have been surprising.
Students will take a day/evening/night walk in the forest and grill some sausage on a campfire, bake some Finnish pulla or some traditional Finnish Christmas food or bakery. They will learn how and when Finns usually celebrate.
In this course students will learn how to dress for the Finnish winter. Every week students will also take a look on what is going to happen in Tampere during the weekend.

Finnish Cuisine and Customs course, 5 ECTS credits
Spring semester (January – May)
Students understand the significance of Finnish cuisine as part of folklore. Students are capable of planning and implementing folksy feasts according to the customer`s needs.
The course is mainly for the exchange students in degree programme in service management.

Finnish for Foreigners I course, 1,5 ECTS credits
Spring semester (January – May)
The student will know the basics about the Finnish language area, principles of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary to be able to speak and understand a little in the everyday life in Finland.
Finnish Culture for Foreigners course, 1,5 ECTS credits
Spring semester (January – May)
The aim of the course is to give the students a many-sided idea about the Finnish culture (history, music, literature, art and design, way of living, everyday life, eating, clothing, leisure time etc.)
In addition, a survival course on Finnish culture and language will be arranged for incoming exchange students.

Finnish for Foreigners course, 2 ECTS credits
Autumn semester (September – October)
The student will know the basics about the Finnish language area, principles of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary to be able to speak and understand a little in the everyday life in Finland.
Focus on Finland course, 3 ECTS credits
Autumn semester (September – October)
Students can maintain, develop and assess their language skills, as well as their language learning skills. They will learn about the Finnish society, history and culture. Students will be able to discuss and give presentations of cultural topics.

Now you have a great possibility to become familiar with the Finnish language and culture before you arrive in Tampere: UUNO is an internet-based guide of Finnish, which introduces you to 10 situations related to the Finnish everyday life and culture in the form of comic strips.
