Living in Finland
Students primarily get accommodation in student housing or can rent it from the private sector.
Student Accommodation
Students coming to study in Tampere:
After you have been accepted, you can apply for student accommodation at Tampere Student Housing Foundation (TOAS) or Pirkan opiskelija-asunnot Oy. Both produce, maintain and rent a full range of high-quality student accommodation in Tampere. The organisations can provide you with an affordable and secure form of housing for the entire duration of your studies.
The most common form of student housing for TOAS is a study-bedroom in a unit comprising 1- 4 such study-bedrooms with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. TOAS has also single apartments, but they are quite hard to get. Pirkan opiskelija-asunnot Oy provides mainly only single, one-room apartments. Usually the rent includes essential furniture, electricity, hot and cold water and use of the laundry and sauna facilities.
Usually the rent varies between 170-350 EUR/month depending on the location and size. To make sure that you will have accommodation you should make the reservation and pay the reservation fee/housing deposit at least 5 weeks before the tenancy begins. By doing so, the housing organisations will send you a confirmation by e-mail.
Please visit the TOAS web site: www.toas.fi/english/index.html for detailed information about the application procedure (application form, amount of reservation fee, TOAS account number, etc.), rules and regulations.
Please contact by email to peltolammi(a)yhkodit.fi to get more information about the apartments and application procedure of Pirkan opiskelija-asunnot Oy. The apartments they offer are located in Peltolammi area about 6,5 kilometers from Tampere City centre and they have just been renovated.
PIRAMK, Kuntokatu has a little student residence for some of the exchange students. If you are a health care student, please do not make any reservations before contacting the international office.
If you are coming to study in Mänttä or Virrat, it is not recommended to rent an apartment from Tampere because of the distances. The incoming exchange student should contact the international staff before making decisions on the accommodation.
If you come to study in Ikaalinen, you can also live in Tampere. The distance between these two places is about 55 kilometres but the bus connections are good. The travelling costs 3,15 €/one way. These "special price" tickets can be bought not until on the spot at Ikaalinen.

Private Sector Accommodation
In Tampere Region, the apartment rents in the private sector are typically higher than in student housing. The apartments are usually non-furnished and the rent does not include electricity, water costs or the use of the common laundry and sauna facilities. The rent in the private sector is about 350 EUR minimum. Students should be very careful when making rental agreements in these cases.
There are various commercial housing agencies in the Tampere Region. For names and addresses of agencies, look under the title asuntovuokraamoja in the yellow pages of phone books. In general, please keep in mind that it is quite difficult to get a flat from the open market, so you should not count on it.
