3.1 Academic year
Pirkanmaa University of Applied Sciences´ academic year starts on 1 August and ends on 31 July. Teaching is provided in 40 weeks divided into four periods.
3.2 Enrolment for attendance or non-attendance
To preserve their study entitlement, students have to enrol for attendance or non-attendance each academic year as stipulated by Pirkanmaa University of Applied Sciences.
The student enrols either
- present for the whole academic year or
- absent for the whole academic year or
- present for the autumn term and absent for the spring term or
- absent for the autumn term and present for the spring term.
The enrolment obligation applies to all students of degree-awarding education. Enrolment is made through the student interface WinhaWille. In connection with enrolment, students have to check their address and personal data in the Winha student register and make the necessary changes to the register. The study office of the unit is to be notified of changes students cannot make to WinhaWille by themselves, such as change of the home municipality.
Continuing students
Continuing students enrol as present or absent through WinhaWille on 1 March – 30 June. They have the right to change the enrolment they have done for the spring term through WinhaWille on 1-30 November. The enrolment for attendance is made automatically for students for whom the president has granted extension time. Students that have been granted extension time cannot enrol for non-attendance.
First-year students beginning their studies in autumn term
Students enrol as present or absent for the first academic year with a separate form when accepting the study place. They have the possibility to change the enrolment for the spring term through WinhaWille on 1-30 November.

Students enrolled for non-attendance
On the basis of absence notice, students have the right to be absent for a term at a time for two academic years in all. The absence does not have to be continuous. The period of absence is not counted into the total duration of studies. If the student has been granted extension time, (s)he may not enrol as absent.
Students enrolled for non-attendance may not attend any activity related to studies or study performances in Pirkanmaa University of Applied Sciences during the period of absence. Students enrolled for non-attendance have no right to student financial aid and meal subsidy or any benefits of the student union membership e.g. travel discounts.
The higher education institution does not organise studies that have been changed or ended during the student´s absence.

3.3 Duration of study entitlement
Studies have to be completed during the duration of the study entitlement. The duration of the study entitlement starts when the applicant has accepted the study place, Pirkanmaa University of Applied Sciences has registered him/ her as student and the student has enrolled for attendance for the first time.
In degree-awarding youth education, students have to complete their studies in at least a year after the nor-mative duration of the studies. The duration of the study entitlement is the normative duration of studies + 1 year. In universities of applied sciences, the normative duration of studies is 3.5 years in 210-credit degrees, 4 years in 240-credit degrees and 4.5 years in 270-credit degrees.
In degree-awarding adult education, students have to complete their studies in a year after the planned duration of the studies.
In master´s degrees in universities of applied sciences, the maximum duration of studies is 2 years in 60-credit degrees and 2.5 years in 90-credit degrees.
The student has to present an account on finishing the studies and the related completion schedule to the teacher tutor two months before the normative duration of the studies or the teaching provided for the adult education group ends.
The extent of the degree can be exceeded with a couple of credits if the extent of some course or part of course demands it.

3.4 Continuation of study entitlement
If the student cannot complete his/ her studies during the normative duration of studies + 1 year, (s)he has to apply for continuation of the study entitlement from the president at least a month before the study entitlement ends. The study plan made by the student and teacher tutor in cooperation, the schedule for the studies and a study progress report given by the study office have to be attached to the application. The student has to present and establish the specific reasons that justify his/ her application. The extension time can only be granted for minor studies missing from the degree so that graduation is realistic during the extension time. As a general rule, extension time can only be applied once and for a year at the most. Extension time is not granted if the student already has the credits demanded for the degree.

3.5 Loss of study entitlement
If the student does not complete his/her studies during the study entitlement, (s)he loses the study entitlement without a separate decision if the president does not grant him/her extension time.
If the student neglects the enrolment obligation, (s)he will lose the study entitlement. The student may reap-ply the study entitlement lost due to negligence of the enrolment obligation from the beginning of the following term at the earliest. The free form written and justified application has to be made to the president. The decision on returning the study entitlement is made by the president.
The student may in written apply for correction into the decision concerning the loss of study entitlement from the board of Pirkanmaa University of Applied Sciences in 14 days after being informed of the decision.
Resigned students have to apply using the normal application procedure.
